In all my years as a professional locksmith technician while servicing safes, I have found myself dealing and having to move a lot of heavy ones. Breaking these safes away from the floor where most of the time seem like they were seating for years, can sometimes be a difficult task. The hard part is in raising the front of the safe high enough to get blocks under it, so a safe dolly can be used in order to move it. It seem I have found a solution and came up with the perfect tool for the job.
I've used a 4' crowbar with the claw cut off . If an attempt to use the crowbar without cutting of the claw will be made, enough lift could not be achieved in order to insert a proper sized block under the edge of the safe. If the bar will be cut straight, you can catch your fingers under the end of the bar once you push down on the bar to raise the safe. By leaving a nub on the bar, a protection for your fingers is being created.
When you encounter a safe where getting the lip of the crowbar under it is impossible in order to lift the front, a length of 2x4 lumber can be used standing on its end as a fulcrum and then putting the crowbar under the bottom hinge of the safe. Now the safe can be lifted high enough in order to put a screwdriver or other spacer under the edge of it to hold it in place while the bar is moved down to the floor to lift the safe edge high enough in order to insert a block. Using a 4' foot crowbar this way, with a length of 2x4 as a fulcrum, should give all the lifting power you will need to raise the fronts on most safes you will come across with.
